Motion carried. Course Proposal Review SOCI 270 (Gender Issues) was submitted for the Human Diversity and Global Perspective designations. Discussion followed about whether course fit appropriately in both categories. The proposal addressed global context and politics under Questions 2 and 5, and in the syllabus. The Committee also discussed whether or not a particular course could apply to two different themes. There is tension in how we interpret our LAC goal, since it is addresses both diversity and global perspective, and not only the 51% issue that emerges when considering the percentage of outcomes required to be met in any particular MnTC course. Williford moved course approval; Butler seconded. Motion carried. ECON 201 (Microeconomics) and ECON 202 (Macroeconomics) were submitted for the History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences designation. Gehle moved the courses approval; Baker seconded. Motion carried. CHEM 231 and 231 L (General Chemistry I) were submitted for the Natural Science designation. Gehle moved its approval; Butler seconded. Motion carried. LIT 170 (Literature: People and the Natural World) was submitted for the Humanities and Fine Arts designation. Brodersen moved its approval; Baker seconded. Motion carried. LIT 261 (The Novel), LIT 262 (Short Story), and LIT 263 (Poetry) were submitted for the Humanities and Fine Arts designation. Butler moved their approval as a package. Williford seconded. Motion carried. POL 227 (Judicial Process) was submitted for the History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences designation. Butler moved and Williford seconded approval. Motion carried. ENGL 251(Writing in Professions) was submitted for the Upper-level Writing Course designation. This course includes a mix of genres to emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of writing across the professions. The English Department emphasizes that students should be sophomores before taking the course; the instructors also would prefer that students have a C or better in ENGL 151 before enrolling in ENGL 251. Williford moved and Brandt seconded approval. Motion carried. University Experience Course There is general agreement that provisional-admit students should take a 2.0-credit University Experience concurrently with the FYS. Academic and Diversity Resources (ADR) faculty will teach the University Experience course. Some Committee members asked whether MSUSAAF instructors also will be able to teach the FYS course. Lyn Brodersen replied that she was unsure about how MSUAASF faculty would gain approval within IFO as adjuncts to teach course. Which department would make the determination to utilize MSUAASF as IFO faculty? Concern also was expressed that, if faculty choose to teach the FYS, their credits per department simply vanish because of recent program redefinitions. Do we need to cross-list the FYS with departmental prefixes? How is credit assigned for Honors courses or Global Studies? These would be good models to investigate. How do we assure faculty will be given proper credit in their respective Departments for teaching FYS? Brodersen will speak with the Cabinet and HR for clarity. Meeting time for FYS faculty Maria Brandt suggested that we put together a meeting time for FYS faculty to address training issues. Lori asked how many faculty were able to attend the initial interest meetings. Corey said that almost everyone interested in teaching the FYS was able to make those meetings. Butler will gather feedback about the questions people may have regarding FYS, and will set up meeting times. Corey will look at Tuesday, April 6 at 12:00 and 4:30 as possible time slots. Maria Brandt will work with Butler on the library-related pieces involved with the FYS. Brodersen suggested that we talk with FYS instructors about the possibility of using the CAT assessment and other FYS-related issues at the Fall Professional Development Day. Linda Nelson suggested that we need to have discussions about exactly how instructors will meet the seven objectives assigned to the FYS. Other Lyn Brodersen shared an email from Steve Kramer regarding his concerns about LAC writing and critical thinking requirements, particularly with regard to MnTC Goals 1 and 2. There was discussion about how students can and should meet all requirements for MnTC and our LAC. Students who transfer with an A.A. would have completed the MnTC. Are the LAC outcomes the drivers here, or is it the LAC purpose? Are we looking at student achievement in terms of outcomes, courses, or credit hours? The Committee considered Dr. Kramers email, and will revisit it at the LACOB meeting on Thursday, April 1. The Committee will revisit some of the FYS proposals at next weeks meeting. Corey Butler provided model syllabi to those who needed further assistance in preparing their syllabi. Linda Nelson shared some draft visual representations of the LAC curriculum that she developed using Appalachian State Universitys LAC model. She is preparing a transfer worksheet and an FAQ page as well. She asked for volunteers to talk about the LAC with eight planned sessions for parents and students in April; Corey Butler indicated he could assist with these sessions. Linda will get the model out to the Committee electronically. We will discuss the model at next weeks meeting as well. Adjournment Butler moved to adjourn, Brandt seconded. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 9:45 am. LACOB will meet again on Thursday, April 1, at 8:00 am in BA 524.
